Reminder Clipper Erickson Concert November 11, 2018
On November 11, the centennial of the end of WWI, at 7:30 at Rock Hall on the Temple University Campus, I will give one of the most meaningful programs I have done in the last several years. I'm privileged to give the first performance of Laurie Altman's Sonata #10 "Aleppo" - a deeply moving and masterful work commemorating one of the seminal tragedies of our century so far. Paired with this is Nathan Dett's Eight Bible Vignettes - his final work expressing home for a new beginning for humanity. I hope that many of you can share this great music with me!
Warm regards and greetings,
Clipper Erickson

Dr. Carol Ann Aicher's Strategies and Challenges for Teaching Adult Students
We were pleased to have Dr. Carol Ann Aicher present a lecture to the Buck County Association of Piano Teachers in October:
Teaching Adults: Challenges and Strategies
Dr. Aicher is from the Manhattan School of Music and shared ideas for teaching piano based on the Learning as Process theory, which she studied for her Ph. D. dissetation, and which she has since helped to expand and refine. The techniques she presented are designed to engage all facets of learning and result in a relaxed and musical performance.
For example, she showed how you could practice complicated rhythms by using words to vocalize the rhythms, then tapping - first, hands separately, then hands together - and, finally, moving to the keyboard. Or, to capture the musical feeling of a piece, you could practice by playing the melody with the right hand while playing the left hand on only the first beat of each measure - or vice versa, if the melody is in the left hand. She said that she would never ask a student to come to her with a piece of music already memorized. Rather, she would expect tht memory would come through careful attention to the process of practicing, which would also produce a pleasing performance.
We thank Dr. Aicher and hope to use these and other innovative ideas to help our students fulfill their personal musical potential.

Carol Ann Aicher earned her Doctorate of Education from Columbia University Teachers College; a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from Mahattan School of Music; a Piano Pedagogy Certificate from MSM's Piano Pedagogy Institute; and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance with a minor in Music History from Oberlin College Conservatory.
Dr. Aicher frequently lectures on pedagogy, presents workshops and adjudicates at festivals and competitions. As both soloist and accompanist, Dr. Aicher has performed at many venues and is a founding member of Mod 2, a duo with English Horn player Kevin Chavez. Dr. Aicher was Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at West Chester University f Pennsylvania from 1999 to 2003. The Graduate Pedagogy courses she has taught at Manhattan School of Music since 2001 are for all majors; this approach using principles and skills that are applicable to every musician is a specialty that she and predecessor Vera Wills developed that is unique in the field of pedagogy. Kevin Chavez, Dr. Carol Aicher, and Ryan Michael Hartman combine their diverse backgrounds within music to interview professionals who work in the performing arts.GRC looks to explore the successful performer's individul path in the arts to discover themes that will help listeners with their own artistic path. Interviews include Grammy winning artists, Broadway and Classical performers, as well as composers, producers, teachers, and many more from the music community.

Winners of the 2018-2019 Crescendo competition are eligible to participate in the Student Exchange Program which will be held in Germany, Austria or Japan. For your convenience we have launched a new on-line registration system where all participants will register, apply for auditions, get results and register for recitals. Applications are accepted on our main website - look for the blue “Apply Now” button, or you can go directly to https://crescendoregistration.org and start there.
The new system requires users to register as a Teacher, a Parent or an Independent Student. Each user gets a profile to apply for auditions, track audition results and register winners for recitals by their choice. Teachers and Parents add students to their profile and manage all aspects of the competition for their students. Students that register as independent or are made independent by teachers manage themselves.
Once you register please be sure to look for email notifications from noreply@crescendocompetition.org in your email box, add it to your email address book to ensure messages are delivered to your Inbox. Wishing you and your students a successful 2018-2019 season!
Brief instructions how to register to the competition:
1. Go to https://crescendocompetition.org , and click the blue “Apply now” button.
2. You will be taken to our new signup and registration system. Once there click the “Sign Up” button in the right upper corner.
3. Choose how would you like to register: as a teacher, a parent or as an independent student. Teachers may add as many students as they want and register them for the competitions. If a teacher will decides that the student should apply to the recitals on their own the teacher can separate the student’s profile by pressing the “set as independent” button. Parents don’t have that option.
4. Fill out the registration form and press “Register”. Your profile will be created. Please go to your email box and find an email from noreply@crescendocompetition.org with your login and temporary password. You may change the password later.
5. Go to https://crescendoregistration.org and click the “Sign In” button in the upper right corner and enter your login information.
6. Click “Add student” and fill out the fields with student information. Optional - if your student studies another instrument with a different teacher you may add that teacher too.
7. Apply the student for auditions of your choice by pressing “Register for Competition” button at the lower left corner or “Auditions” button on the main menu bar at the top of the page.
8. Fill out the audition registration form.
9. Participants may apply for auditions as many times as they like for solo and/or ensemble performances. One composition performed at one audition location is considered one entry.
10. Choose the payment option: you may choose to pay on-line or send a check (once the check is received an administrator will mark your application as “paid” in your profile)
11. Your auditions information will be available in “Auditions and Payment” on the main menu bar at the top of the page.
12. The time of the audition will be assigned to your audition application in your profile at least 1 week prior the audition.
13. Audition results will be uploaded to your profile within 1 week after the auditions. You will receive an email with audition results and personalized links to register for a recital of the second round, reserve the tickets and pay the recital fee.
Sincerely,
