*****2020 Lindey Christiansen Art Song Festival
Samuel Barber: An American Master

This year’s festival celebrates the vocal music of Samuel Barber. Pennsylvania-born and Curtis-educated, Barber rose to international prominence at a young age, producing a catalogue of works that has been embraced by generations. Steeped in the music of Debussy, Strauss, Brahms and the Italian masters, Barber’s musical style mixes nineteenth-century Romanticism with a distinctive brand of chromaticism and modernist techniques. Possessing an exceptional understanding of the voice and the expressive gestures inherent in language, Barber wrote songs and operatic works outstanding for their emotional depth and dramatic charge. His vast song collection includes diverse and distinctive settings of texts from the English language canon, from the fantastical visions of James Joyce to the psychologically astute meditations of Irish monks from the 8th to the 13th centuries, to the American lyricism of James Agee. Our concerts will feature all of Barber’s published songs as well as several large-scale vocal works and lesser-known, previously unpublished songs. Join us for this exploration of an American master.
